11/22/2023 0 Comments Reddit for frodoI always thought the way we're initially introduced to Frodo is interesting. The extent to which he 'gets' both Aragorn and Faramir is telling too and bears out your point. Frodo doesn't get the same love as some of the bigger personalities among Tolkien's characters, but, for me, he's the quiet heart of the story. I think that they would rather not have had the roles thrust upon them, but would have rather remained in the background, in the shadows drinking a pint and quietly enjoying the tales and antics of more extroverted individuals. They were peacemakers and I get the sense that they took no pleasure in fighting, but when the moment came, unexpected power seemed to burst out of them. They both have an almost buried sense of fierce hope and faith, paired with bouts of despair and doubt. They both have that quiet, dark, brooding something. Finally, you are probably thinking who I'm thinking.Aragorn, of course. I was trying to think of any one else in the stories who is at all similar, touching on Bilbo, Gandalf, Elrond, Faramir, even Finarfin from the earlier stories. He is clearly an introvert, he is thoughtful and speaks few words, he had a melancholic side even before the ring came to him, he's cautious, and doesn't seem to exhibit the petty silliness that many hobbits exhibit. We never get to know very many hobbits, and I am sure that hobbit personalities are just as varied as those of us big people, but to me Frodo stands out by how little he actually stands out. I am struck by how unusual and remarkable a hobbit Frodo is. There are other Tolkien-themed subreddits out there!
